Euphemistic Language....

From my understanding... euphemistic language is speak with pleasing words or a word that we used in order not offend any people.

For examples:

Lady of the evening [the real mean is : prostitute, whore , hooker)

African-American people [the real mean is: a nigger, black people)

Connotation: idea or quality suggested by a word in addition to its main meaning.

Mr. Mark which he is my lecturer has told us about the 3 researchers which related to euphemistic language. They are: Noam Chomsky, Michel Foucault and George Carlin.

Noam Chomsky said: the words change but the meaning may stay same. However, Michel Foucault said that the words may be the same but the meaning may not. We should used honest and direct language! He also add, there are no such things as positive and negative words.

In my opinion, sometimes using euphemistic language can be accepted but some people, might not like it! For the Malay races, they are soft hearted and more sensitive especially the female in all ages. They easy to get touched when people used direct language. For example, "U look chubby". i'll bet, she will start to diet tomorrow.

Other examples:

Julia who was called by the Lord (Julia is dead)

Bathroom tissue (toilet paper)

Running shoes (sneakers)

Physically challenge (handicaps people)

Learning disorder (stupid people)

Those with survive appearance (ugly people)

Guess room dinning (room service)

Lamb field (dog)

Automobile crash (car crash)

Passed away (die)
